LAVALite and UNetBootin

So I have been using UnetBootin lately to build USB bootable OS sticks. I'll take a version of LAVA or even a PE Bart disk and run it thru Unetbootin and voila - instant USB Linux or rescure disk. I've used it to clean viruses off desktops, recuse files from pcs which will no longer boot, even do complete installs off the stick. Plus I sometimes use it as my desktop when I don't have my pc - Just go to someone's pc, boot up and you are working.

Thunar Script: Search for Files

In order to search for files in Thunar I found a nice little app by the name of catfish.

You can install this on your machine simply by typing:
"sudo apt-get install catfish"

Once it is installed, go into your Custom Actions menu under Thunar and add a new action called "Search for files"

Just add catfish --path=%F in the command line

Remember to select Apperance and Conditions in the tab window and select just the directories option. This will restrict this script from only working and showing itself when you right click on a directory. You can even give it an Icon so it is visually easy to see on the right click context menu. Now whenever you right click on a directory you will see a new menu key called "Search for files" - have fun.

Thunar Custom Actions

For those who are interested you can add a wealth of new features to xubuntu via the custom actions menu key in the file manager. For a complete how-to check out:

http://thunar.xfce.org/pwiki/documentation/custom_actions

I don't want to go over something that is well documented but you need to know where to go to add the scripts I will begin posting on the site. Once you add your first script, you'll find it is very simple to add very complex items to your workflow.

Building new LiveCD based on Xubuntu

Already have the base CD and DVD sets done - tweaking the performance and artwork. In truth, my LAVA project I built using Ubuntu Gnome as a base really helped me prepare in building a XFCE CD. Alot of the same objectives applied, same need for similar apps, etc. I will say that XFCE is soooooo much faster but I ended up really customizing the interface. Change behaviour and some default apps as well as adding alot of expected functionality from a desktop user. Example: The ability to right click on a file and email to someone using thunderbird or right click and search for a file. It's been fun adding and removing. In the end I still have a desktop that is alot fast than my gnome counterpart and it is still very functional. So much so that I might leave the gnome desktop off my pc for awhile.
